Dramatised documentary marking the 60th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Everest. After the United Kingdom lost the race to both the North and South Poles, Mount Everest was seen as the Earth's greatest remaining geographical challenge. In 1924, two intrepid British climbers, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, disappeared shortly after being spotted when they were only 800 feet from the mountain's summit. Twenty-nine years later, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay followed in the footsteps of these two lost heroes. This programme traces both expeditions from their initial organisation to the mountain itself, comparing the experiences and fortitude of two generations of adventurers through their letters and diaries.
