If you chose to visit Mount Everest base camp which side would you choose and why?
For me it would be the North side so I could follow in the footsteps of the early British expeditions, and also because you get to see more of the mountain.

My lifelong dream was to visit base camp on the Nepal side. I wanted to see the Sherpa villages I'd read about all my life, like Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, Pheriche, and Gokyo. I loved the trek so much when I went in 2006 I did it again three years later, with a few variations. That time I wanted to see EBC on the Tibet side as well, but China was not allowing foreigners in 2009.
As an asthmatic, I think it was better to trek slowly to altitude. Driving to EBC would be faster and easier physically, but I don't think I would have acclimatized so well. I'm leary of gaining altitude too fast. That's why I wanted to do the north side immediately after the south side, as I would have been well acclimatized.

Good point about doing the North side right after the South side as you would be well acclimatized.

The problem is that China only lets groups into Tibet, and unless your group is on the same trek on the south side, they're going to need to acclimatize at a slower rate. I dialed in an extra week after my Nepal trek, hoping I could do a whirlwind tour of Lhasa and EBC, but even if they had allowed foreigners, chances are I'd never have been able to do it that quickly.
